Anyone else really excited for summer? It's the time of the year where we can start begging for summer Fridays and change out our sweaters for tank tops and flip-flops. More importantly, it's the season where day drinking isn't just socially acceptable, but it's expected. We are freaking excited to go to that first afternoon, sipping something cool like a frozen cocktail and refreshing in someone's backyard.
Because we're so darn excited, we're going to talk about what events call for wines and what wines and wine spritzers you need to drink this summer. Man, oh, man! Let's get this day drinking party started!
What Are Fun Occasions for Day Drinking?
Does anything say summer quite like drinks at 2:00? Summer calls for crisp whites, smooth watermelon rosé, and the occasional light-bodied reds. Because day drinking means you'll likely be sipping and nursing a drink for a more extended period than you would if you just had a few drinks of tequila at a bar after dinner, it's essential to be selective on what you're drinking. For example, starting with straight-up Smirnoff vodka won't end well. Instead think of options such as a margarita, watermelon rose wine spritzer or some of the other great options we have to share.
Other things to keep in mind while day drinking: make sure you're eating. Not only will it keep you from finishing the day early, but it will also keep you from waking up the following day with a killer hangover. To encourage you to eat alongside your day drinking, we've come up with the best excuses to day drink and the ultimate pairings that go with the food you might eat. Put down your Moscato and black-cherry flavored drink and get ready for some game-changing pairings.
Picnics
If you're going to expect us to eat on the ground, you better have wine on hand. We're not high maintenance; we just know what we want. Picnic food and drinks are all about the ability to travel with them. Not only does the food have to survive the time it takes to get to your designated picnic area, but the food and wine have to handle not being cold for a period and not be messy. What pairs best with all of the above? Well, it depends on what you're chowing down, but more often than not, it's a chilled, refreshing glass of white wine.
Pasta Salad: If your pasta salad is packed with veggies like olives or tomatoes, pair it with a peppery white like a dry Sauvignon Blanc.
PB&J: Going for a class peanut butter and jelly sandwich? Make it a meal for grown-ups by pairing it with a Lambrusco. A wine from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, Lambrusco is a red wine that will offer fruity aromas, subtle sweetness, and the right amount of sparkle to complement the jelly's sweetness.
Holidays
Fourth of July is the holiday of the summer! And can you celebrate the fourth without a hot dog or hamburger? The answer is and should always be a resounding NO!
Hot Dog: An unlikely pairing, wine, and hot dogs, but a delicious one that we're sure you're going to want to try again and again. Nothing can contrast the salty combo of hot dogs quite like a Sauvignon Blanc's light and fruity flavor. Citrusy and tropical, Sauvignon will be the perfect palate cleanser while chowing down on a hot dog!
Hamburger: If you build yourself the perfect burger, one that has the ideal combination of lettuce, tomato, onion, and cheese, you're going to need a wine that has a bitter-sweet element. We think Grenache will do the trick!
Brunch
Hear us out: if you can drink a mimosa with breakfast, then any wine is fine for breakfast as well. Seriously, ditch the OJ from time to time and be a trendsetter by just drinking wine!
Avocado Toast: Alright, enough with the chatter about Millenials wasting their money buying avocado toast. First of all, the reason we're poor is our student debt, and second of all, student debt isn't a fun topic, so we're going to end this part of the conversation entirely. To the point: the perfect wine for a delicious, savory avocado toast has to be Sauvignon Blanc because it perfectly enhances the green flavors and adds a much-needed hint of acidity.
Chicken & Waffles: You go, girl! If this is your order, we hope you're ready for the annoying "Can I try a bite?" you'll get from all of your friends. Regardless, this feast calls for chilled red wine. The red wine's tannins are excellent at scraping fat from your tongue and offering you a refreshment like a glass of iced tea on a super hot summer day.
What Should I Look for in a Daytime Wine?
As the poster child for daytime wine, we'll tell you our qualities to know what to look for in other wines (or not, you can always just drink our Bev girls).
Portable
Forever, the only option for alcoholic beverages was canned beer. And while we love them on an occasional basis, they're not our everyday first choice beverage. Canned wine has entered the chat, and consequently they are more portable than ever!
Stylish
I mean... have you looked at our cans? Is there a more stylish can out there?!
Slightly Sparkling
We're the only canned wine explicitly made to be canned because of our signature seltzer fizz. Not only does canning the wine keep it crisp and fresh, but you also won't have to worry about broken glass on the pool deck or bonfire, and bring that baby with you everywhere you go! This sparkling wine goes great whether you wanna have a drink at sunup or sundown.
