Whatever your health, fitness, or wellness goals may be, it’s helpful to understand what “low carb wine” really means. There are many delicious wines out there, but the truth is... not all wines are created equal! Many diets, like the keto diet or any low carb weight loss diet, are all about grams of carbs and sugar content. So, if you’re a wine lover embarking on a low carb diet journey, we’re here to help! To break it down,  grams of carbs - or carbohydrates - in wine come from the natural sugar that remains present after fermentation. The fermentation process turns the natural sugar in grapes into the perfect drinking alcohol (hello wine!). But sometimes, this process leaves some amount of sugar behind - aka residual sugar. Since different types of wines have different fermentation processes, each varietal of wine has a different amount of carbs. 

White Wines

Riesling 5.54 grams

In terms of grams of carbs, Riesling is relatively low carb, with 5.54 grams per serving. Brut (aka unsweetened!), with relatively high acidity, pinot grigio stands out by letting notes of lime, lemon, pear, green apple, and white nectarine shine. But the best part?     There are so many great choices for low carb wines, but not all wines are created equal! There are still a few high carb wines that should be avoided if you’re on a ketogenic diet or low carb diet such as sparkling wine, merlot, and moscato. Generally speaking, many commercial wines that have a price tag below ten dollars will contain more residual sugar and therefore, more carbs (sad face). In general, it’s best to steer clear of dessert wines and sweet wines - including certain red wines like port or sherry wines, which can have up to 9 grams of carbs per serving, as well as sangrias, which can have up to 13.8 grams of carbs per serving. Stick to dry wines instead of the sweet ones, and you’ll be within the keto-friendly zone!
